    What makes it fun

The Shoal Creek Living History Museum consists of 21 structures, 13 of which are actual 19th century structures ranging from 1807 to 1885. To create a town environment, we transported antique log cabins and homes from neighboring counties. The grounds are open from dawn to dusk every day. The buildings, however, are only open for special events. Use our Walking Tour Guide Booklet, which includes building details, for self-guided tours. Brochures are also available at the information box at the front door, the kiosk, and the mercantile front porch. Picnic among the enormous shade trees and catch a peek of the bison at the museum's entrance. The structures are open during our special events, and re-enactors bring the village to life with skits, conflicts, and demonstrations.

The first time I visited here, my life changed greatly, forever.

    July 4th, 2024

I was in an argument with my wife, and I drove away angry, leaving her and our cat here at Shoal Creek, (we had lost our house and living out of the car) my wifes cat, which she had for nine years, ran off into the wild buffalo pen here, never to be seen again.

A social worker at the neighboring golf course picked up my wife, and, she left me for him, for a few months.

It wasn't until this day that changed my life forever, that I realized, I needed to change my own life and the way I was living,
I got clean from drugs, and started doing things right,
My wife also got clean from drugs, and realized, this rich guy was a terrible person.

We are now both clean and sober and living productive healthy lives, but, the cat is gone forever, maybe still somewhere around Shoal Creek, a place I will NEVER forget.

    Great living history museum.
Go check it out, maybe it will change your life.

Took my kiddos and two of our neighborhood kiddos to check out Dhoal Creek strictly to see the buffalo.

It's free to walk in. This was tricky because the entrance is a side ramp that is easy to miss, especially with 7 kids in the vehicle. Good thing we caught someone closing the gate and asked.

The kids had such an amazing time. We were only there for 30 minutes, but we could have at least spent another 1 hour there. We have ages 16 to 9, and everyone enjoyed themselves. Even the 16 year old who didn't want to join to begin with.

When we first arrived, the buffalo weren't anywhere in sight. They slowly came up to greet the kids. It was amazing. Can't wait to go back!

Totally recommend. We arrived around 130pm. Did not cost anything to walk in and see the buffalo.

Great place to roam around and enjoy the outdoors on a nice day. I can’t wait to visit during an event so we can go inside the buildings. It reminds me a little bit of Missouri Town in Lees Summit

I've been to this place multiple times and it's beautiful every season. I've introduced it to many friends as a fantastic place to explore. A lot of the times that I go, there is 0-1 other person there so I jokingly pretend that I'm just stepping back in time and this is my own town 😂 It is a beautiful and peaceful place to have a picnic, walk your dog, visit the Bison, and explore some trails! If I wasn't moving away, I'd honestly sign up to volunteer to help take care of this place. The doctor's backyard garden is a dream project! 💕

Happy Gillis is one of the most famus brunch spots in Kansas City. It’s like eating in a mom’s kitchen. The African Peanut Stew is one of my favorite seasonal stews. They always have cute decorations for each season. The biscuits and mushroom gravy is also one of the favorites in this restaurant. The restaurant is only open from Thursday to Sunday from 9am to 2pm.

In town visiting and decided to take the family out for a piece of history. Like other reviewers I should of checked the website. When Google said it was opened I assumed we’d be able to get into the buildings. Kids still had a good time running through the old town. We were able to read all the historical signs for each building and peak through some windows. Would like to go back during an event so we could see the inside but this is doubtful since we are visiting from out of state.

On the day we happened upon this little piece of history, there was no one there except a few other visitors. Thankfully, there were signs at every building explaining what each one was and where the buildings came from. Since the weather was perfect, we took our time and wandered around, looking over everything and peeking in any windows we could. All in all, it was quite enjoyable and we vowed to return some weekend when the period actors are there. The first surprise was the living, grazing buffalo near the entrance!

Nice walk back in time. If you're looking for a quiet, nice stroll this is your place. There were 4 bison in the pasture the day we went. The buildings are well taken care of. There are water fountains and the restrooms were clean. There was no charge to enter. Great place to take some beautiful pictures. ❤️
