What makes it fun
The Scout, which was dedicated in 1922 as a memorial to local Native tribes, portrays a Sioux scout on horseback. Originally cast for the Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915, it stopped in Kansas City for a brief exhibition before returning to the sculptor on the east coast. The Scout was sculpted by Cyrus E. Dallin of Boston and France for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, where it won a Gold Medal. People were so moved by the statue that they raised $15,000 to buy it. Its conspicuous location on a hill in Penn Valley Park provides a panoramic view of the city. This larger-than-life equestrian statue has become the city's symbol and mascot.
