What makes it fun
Carl Milles, a Swedish sculptor, based his tribute to William Volker on an equestrian image of St. Martin of Tours, France's patron saint. Volker was a well-known citizen and philanthropist who had done so much to improve Kansas City. Four secondary figurines flank the main statue. Two ponds on either side feature fountain jets. Water is raised to varying heights by three layers. Milles added a humorous touch by carving a timepiece on another angel and having an angel play the flute from the wrong end. St. Martin on horseback is the primary image, with a beggar below.
