    What makes it fun

The Golden Ox Restaurant opened in 1949 with the intention of providing a great place for the farmers and ranchers who brought their livestock to the stockyards to dine. The Golden Ox, located on the first floor of the Livestock Exchange Building in the heart of the stockyards, continues the tradition. Our professional staff serves only the best quality steaks and is one of the handful restaurants that continues to age and hand cut its steaks.

I wouldn’t go back unfortunately. Our reservation was for 5:30. Food didn’t come out until almost 8pm. It was just ok. The service was what was lacking. Our large party complained to the “floor manager” who asked, “What do you want, free drinks or something?” Nope, just good service and hot food.
The waiter, who was nice but made inappropriate jokes in poor taste about a “baby mama” and showed up sporadically then took my mothers plate before she was finished eating.. needed additional support and constantly apologized for the service he seemingly knew was poor. We ate in the kitchen, watched a shrimp cocktail sit out on the counter for 35 minutes prior to being served to someone.

The “deposit” that was supposed to come off the bill for our large party.. didn’t, but was refunded once we brought it up to the waiter. It just wasn’t a good experience for my cousins 40th birthday. It made us late to the next event.
I waited a few days to post this review as to be careful with my words as I was angry the night of. For the price, it was a let down. We likely won’t return.

Food was good. Steak was cooked to perfection! I wish there had been more bar selections for cocktails without bourbon or whisky. Like flavored vodka or rum. Martinis. Sangria. Service was great!

I love this place. Not only for the history but the food is always great. One of my favorite places to eat a steak. Especially, since they invented the Kansas City strip.

I really debated writing this review, but I had a pretty rough experience at Golden Ox a couple weeks ago for my birthday. I made a reservation for 7:45 on Friday October 18th. Not long after we were seated, a party of 35 came in without a reservation and the restaurant opted to seat them at (3) different locations around the restaurant. I am going to say the rest of the experience would not have been the same if that very large unexpected party did not come in, but our appetizer and drinks came out very nicely, the crab cake and drinks were pretty good. We then ordered the $130 steak for two and asked for the steak to be cooked medium. We ordered the steak a little after 8pm, and it did not come out until after 10pm. When the steak came out, our waitress asked us to cut into the steak and check for temperature and she would be back to the table. When we cut into the steak it was very rare. So rare the meat was cool to the touch on the inside, and our waitress did not come back to check for temp for over 10 minutes. When we asked her to take the steak back and cook a little longer she took it back, and then came back and apologized as she agreed the steak was extremely rare. So we wait for the steak to return, and after a little over another 10 minutes while our sides remained on the table with us getting cold, the steak came back out and was still very under-cooked. They offered to take the steak back again, but at this point it was almost 10:30 and we were just ready to be done. The waitress was very thankful for our patience as she seemed to know this experience was very unsatisfactory, but for over a $200 bill, we were hoping for a little bit of a break on the check which was not received. We left pretty frustrated with the lack of accountability and will most likely never spend money at this establishment again.

I'm not a steak house fan, but I make an exception for the Golden Ox. We started with oysters - that night's were sourced from Cape Cod. They were delicious and well shucked. The buttermilk salad dressing is great, and the steak was delicious. I asked for rare, I got rare. Details count. We finished with cheesecake and tiramisu. Both were delicious. I should also mention the atmosphere, the interior really brings back the mid century cow town vibe, and real candles!

Took our daughter to celebrate her 16th birthday. Billie was a fantastic server! The food was excellent as always.

Visiting KC, Golden Ox came up more than once, for better or worse. Guess we had to try the Kansas City Cut.

An old school steakhouse with great ambience and service. No issues with either. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the hype or maybe did, looking at some of the reviews.

Smoked Wings - Good smoke flavor. Not crispy at all. Fat not rendered enough and drums were chewy.

Kansas City Cut (Bone in NY strip) - decent, not great and not worth the price tag.

Sides: loaded baked potato - had house made thick cut bacon in it, just not enough. Just a baked potato.

Creamed spinach - pretty good, spinach, cream and cheese.

Glad we went but would not go again.

Our waiter was like Ron White on his best behavior; a little less confident, but he knew what to recommend. Gravy was the highlight of the mushroom appetizer. Overall, they were good. The wedge salad was fantastic! After a reminder, the squash soup arrived-mediocre. The KC strip was missing its bone that our waiter bragged would add flavor. It was medium, but medium rare was requested. The ribeye HAD a bone. The meat was thicker than a fillet, rare on one side and medium on the other. Still, it was delicious, as was the strip. We were seated by a speaker laden with the same calypso rap song during our entire meal. Adding lyrics from Police songs doesn't make rap better, no matter how much I love Sting.

Their dishes are expensive for a reason—because they are worth every penny spent. Delicious. I opted for the Manhattan steak (14oz of sheer bliss) with grilled asparagus. Our waiter John was great, and the general manger, Joe, shared great history about the stockyards beginnings and the fire that took it down. Every bite was savored and the ambiance takes you back to simpler times when beef—it was always what was for dinner!

Nice upscale bar with lounge seating as well as tables and chairs. The outdoor patio isn’t very large but would be the desired spot on a nice evening. Great views of downtown KC and the place has a nice vibe. Service was excellent and the food was extremely good. It’s small plates made for sharing. The cocktails are top notch. It’s a little pricey but out of line for an upscale place.
